The original benchmark in high performance, 2-component, epoxy resin coated and bound, graded alluvial sand, paving joint mortars!
The unique development of the vdw 800 paving joint mortar was made and produced near the historic City of Cologne in Germany, which is renowned for its stone buildings, public squares, and pavements, and this was just over 25 years ago! - Time clearly flies and many hundreds of thousands of square metres have been installed across Europe, all around the UK and elsewhere around the world. GftK’s vdw 800 and the production facilities have been continually expanded, updated and enhanced of course, but today in the 2020’s, it is still the Gold Standard Paving Joint Mortar for cost effective, durable and attractive paving joint works.
The climate of the area around Cologne is also a difficult environment for paving jointing, as the materials have to cope with significantly higher than the UK temperatures in summer and significantly lower temperatures than most of the UK in winter, both conditions when all types of conventional paving joint solutions are difficult to apply and install, as well as prone to premature failure.
This illustrate that right from the very beginning, GftK’s vdw 800 has been designed to be suitable for use in difficult conditions and with small small and larger format paving of almost all types of natural stone in domestic, commercial, and public paved areas. The vdw 800 paving joint mortar can safely and securely accommodate pedestrian and light to medium vehicular traffic loads (cars and vans etc).
The mortar is supplied in 2-components including epoxy resin pre-coated quartz sand, to which the hardener and a measured amount of water is added, then mixed in the pails supplied, to a uniform, fully homogeneous colour, and consistence. The freshly mixed mortar is then easily and quickly applied using wet-slurry application techniques across the thoroughly pre-dampened surfaces. This is done standing-up in an ergonomic position, by rubber squeegees, so that the mortar effectively self-compacts into the joints. Apply more water from a hose where necessary to keep the paving wet and the mortar flowing. After an initial few minutes (around 15mins @ 20օ C), the surface is finished using a soft coconut bristle brush frequently dipped in clean water to remove any excess.
As the vdw 800 is always applied to pre-dampened surfaces, one more advantage is that it can be applied shortly after wet weather, without waiting for the areas to dry after rainfall, although with vdw 800 the surface must be covered if more rain is expected to prevent resin run-off. Alternatively you could use the latest state-of-the-art development GftK’s vdw 850+ that can even be applied in the pouring rain e.g. when needs must to finish a job and/or get paid!
GftK vdw 800 reacts, cures, and hardens quickly to provide a tough and durable, good looking paved surface, with no shrinkage cracking (as applies with all cement-based mortars), and which is excellent in preventing weed growth and stopping boring insects. The hardened vdw 800 paving joint mortar is also resistant to abrasion, including cleaning with high pressure water-jetting, even to cleaning by mechanical street cleaners and sweepers, plus it is fully resistant to the freeze thaw reactions from exposure to de-icing salts. GftK's vdw 800 - Still the global benchmark in paving joint mortars and with extensive references all around the UK through NCC Streetscape since 2007.
